Wholesale outpaces retail at Woolworths
31.10.07 Philip Jones
Third party sales at Woolworth's wholesale division, including EUK, Bertrams and THE, increased by 61.9% for the 38 weeks to 27th October 2007, according to a trading update put out this morning. The growth helped the Woolworths group record a sales rise of 16.6% for the period, despite a 0.4% drop in like-for-like sales at its retail division.
Chief executive Trevor Bish-Jones, said: "We have made good progress across all of our businesses in the year to date. We are confident that operationally the businesses are in good shape, with strong customer propositions going into the critical Christmas trading period. However, we continue to be cautious about the trading environment and have planned accordingly by focussing on cost control, cash generation and margin enhancement."
Bish-Jones added that the retail business was well set up operationally for the critical Christmas sales period and the Worth it! Range continued to perform well. He said work to integrate the independent books business of THE into Bertrams was now well underway and would complete in early 2008.
