Charlton vs Warne on William Hill shortlist

The shortlist for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year has been unveiled and features three titles from publishers in the Hachette Livre UK group. HarperCollins has two titles on the list and Bloomsbury has one via A&C Black.

The shortlisted books are:

United Years (Headline)
Kevin Cook's Tommy’s Honour (HarperCollins)          
Chuck Culpepper's Up Pompey (Weidenfeld & Nicolson)
Duncan Hamilton's Provided You Don’t Kiss Me (4th Estate)
Nick Ward with Sinéad O'Brien's Left For Dead (A&C Black)
Simon Wilde's Shane Warne: Portrait of a Flawed Genius (John Murray)

The judging panel for the 2007 William Hill Sports Book of the Year is: John Gaustad (chairman), Paul Hayward, Danny Kelly, John Inverdale, Hugh McIlvanney and Alyson Rudd. The winner, who will be revealed on 26th November at Waterstone's Piccadilly, will receive a £18,000 cash prize, a specially bound hand-bound copy of the winning book, and a free £2,000 bet.

"The short-list features a fantastic line up of sporting heroes, heroism, history and humour and guarantees a memorable and worthy winner," said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe. "This is a short-list to match that of any literary award."

Waterstone's sports buyer Sam Harrison added: "Waterstone’s is proud to be supporting such a wonderfully varied and intelligent shortlist of titles, any one of which would make a worthy winner. From the intimate portrayal of one of the most unforgettable characters in English football to the extraordinary story of golf's founding father and son, it is a list which demonstrates the breadth and richness in sports writing today."
