Judges line up for IPG awards

A number of industry heavyweights have been lined up as judges for the Independent Publishers Guild's second annual Independent Publishing Awards. The 2008 awards, organised in association with The Bookseller and the London Book Fair, aim to celebrate the best of the UK's independent publishers.
Judges confirmed so far include Bookseller editor-in-chief Neill Denny; PA c.e.o. Simon Juden; new PFD c.e.o. Caroline Michel; Routledge executive chairman Sonny Leong; Blackwell Publishing director Philip Blackwell; former Cambridge University Press m.d. Michael Holdsworth; Daily Mail literary editor Jane Mays; Amazon senior books manager Kes Nielsen; David Higham Associates literary agent Caroline Walsh and Ian Snowley; director of academic services at the University of London Research Library Services.
More judges will be announced over the next few months. There are ten categories, including an overall winner and two new awards for environmental and e-publishing.
Bridget Shine, executive director of the IPG, said: "After the very successful launch of the prizes this year, we hope as many companies as possible will enter themselves in this celebration of independent publishing."
Entry forms for the awards are available at www.ipg.uk.com/awards, and the deadline is 8th December. Shortlists will be announced on 18th January with the awards presented at a gala dinner during the IPG annual conference in Brighton on 8th March 2008.
In the inaugural awards, Jessica Kingsley Publishers was chosen as the van Tulleken Independent Publisher of the Year. Other recipients were Faber, Barrington Stoke, Featherstone Education, Jolly Learning, Frances Lincoln and Philip Kogan.
