Frankfurt buzz and schmooze
There was a time when American publishers and agents came here and actually bought or sold rights to publish books in foreign countries or languages on the spot, notes the New York Times. It still happens, but in recent years the fair has become more of a chance to schmooze and build buzz for deals down the road.
The piece follows rights specialist Anna Stein and her brother Lorin Stein, an editor at Farrar, Straus & Giroux. "Most nights the brother and sister rendezvoused close to midnight at the Frankfurter Hof, a luxury hotel that is the unofficial nerve center of the fair. Mr. Stein usually appeared in a chocolate brown velvet jacket, while Ms. Stein always wore stylish outfits. Well into the middle of the night they shouldered their way through the heaving crowds in the lobby, constantly bumping into friends they shared."
