Canongate finds its lead title Down Under
Canongate's Anya Serota has bought Australian novelist Helen Garner's first book for 15 years, and will publish as a super-lead title next July.
Serota purchased UK and Commonwealth rights in The Spare Room from Text in Australia. The book, which charts the friendship between two friends as one is treated for cancer, is the first fiction Canongate has acquired from Text since The Secret River.
Serota, who joined Canongate in November 2006 from John Murray, said the novel was one of the most moving and memorable she had read for a long time.
