HarperCollins US in film deal
02.10.07 Alison Flood
HarperCollins US has entered a strategic partnership with New York-based independent film production company Sharp Independent to collaborate on films based on HC's titles. The new entity will be called Sharp Independent at HarperCollins, and will work with authors and agents to acquire film rights for future, current and existing backlist adult titles.
It will be housed in HC's New York offices. Harper/Morrow president and group publisher Michael Morrison will oversee the venture for HC, and Luke Parker Bowles will serve as vice president of production for Sharp Independent.
The new partnership is part of a multi-year agreement, the terms of which were not disclosed.
"We are always looking for ways to give our authors¹ works greater visibility. Providing an avenue and competitive advantage in the film world is another example of this," said Morrison. "Jeff [Sharp, president and c.e.o. of Sharp Independent] is a talented and experienced producer with an excellent track record of adapting literature to film. His presence is sure to give our authors additional exposure in an increasingly competitive industry."
"Under Michael Morrison's leadership, HarperCollins is a home for innovation and creativity. This partnership provides an extraordinary opportunity to pair wonderful books with directors, writers and actors that I know and respect and make great films in the process. I look forward to the challenge that this collaboration offers," added Sharp.
