HMV will not reopen Fopp in London
29.08.07 Graeme Neill
HMV has said that it is unlikely to open a branch of the collapsed retail chain Fopp in London after failing to come to an agreement with the landlords of Fopp's Covent Garden branch. HMV bought seven stores from the administrators of Fopp earlier this month.
However, it has failed to reach an agreement with the landlord of the Earlham Street branch, who is understood to be keen on opening a fashion store in that building instead. "We were very excited about reopening the store but the landlord was extremely keen on following his own plan," said an HMV spokesman. "We're very upset."
Trading has begun in five of the other stores HMV took over in Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and Nottingham. Another store in Byres Road, Glasgow, is expected to open within the next few weeks. HMV did not take over any other London stores.
