Avon introduces videos into e-books
22.08.07 Kimberly Maul
Avon Books, a romance imprint of HarperCollins publishers, has launched a new component to its e-books: videos embedded in the text. The first book in using a new "DNL Reader" technology, developed by DNAML Pty Limited, is Lady Amelia's Secret Lover, by Victoria Alexander, which will be on-sale as an e-book original in the U.S. on Sept. 4.
"Through Avon's many successful online initiatives, we've learned that romance readers want to foster a relationship with their favorite authors," said Liate Stehlik, publisher of Avon Books. "The publication of this exclusive e-book featuring a popular author allows us to deliver the personal contact that fans desire."
Videos featuring Alexander will pop up on-screen at various points during the novel to "talk candidly about the plot's turning points and her vivid characters," Avon said in a press release.
"When I first saw Victoria Alexander come onscreen, I couldn't get over how much fun it was to see (and hear) her commentary," said Lucia Macro, executive editor for Morrow/Avon. "We specifically chose this author to launch this new technology because Victoria, a former broadcast journalist, has extensive on camera experience. She also has a great sense of humor—which comes along winningly in these interactive pop-ups."
