Petition protests Waterstone's closure

An online petition has been set up to try and stop Waterstone's closing its Wood Green store in north London. The "Save the last decent bookshop in Wood Green" petition, online at www.PetitionOnline.com/Bookshop, has already attracted more than 150 signatures.

Waterstone's will close the branch on 11th August. A spokesperson for the retailer said it would be looking to relocate as many as possible of the 13 Wood Green staff into other branches.

Waterstone's will also open a new branch on London's Oxford Street on 11th August. It took control of the 9,000 sq ft former Books Etc store in May, shortly before it stopped trading at the nearby 311 Oxford Street branch. The new format store will be managed by Rik McShane, former manager of the Oxford Street store.

The moves are part of Waterstone's m.d. Gerry Johnson’s plans to cut its floor space by 10% over the next three years.
