Bloomsbury defends Potter price

Asda, the supermarket chain, has accused Bloomsbury, the publisher of Harry Potter, of hiking up the recommended retail price of the final book, reports the Telegraph, in a general piece about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The supermarket, which is selling the book at £8.99, claims that the RRP for the first novels was much lower. Most retailers are charging just under £9, while the RRP is £17.99.

Bloomsbury defended the price. A spokesman said the first novel in 1997 was 250 pages and cost £10.99, but prices had merely risen in line with the rest of the hardback fiction market. The latest book runs to 608 pages.

More than two million people have pre-ordered copies of the seventh and last Harry Potter book to ensure they are among the first to discover the boy wizard's fate.
