Transworld moves into Ireland

Transworld has revealed plans to set up a new subsidiary company in Ireland, headed by Eason's head buyer Eoin McHugh. Transworld Ireland will launch with its first list in 2008, focusing on Irish writers or books about Irish issues. McHugh, who joins the company as publisher in September, will report to senior publishing director Francesca Liversidge.

Transworld m.d. Larry Finlay said he expected the company to "quickly grow to become a major force in Irish publishing". "We have enjoyed great success in Ireland and I'm thrilled to be making this commitment to major growth for Transworld in what is an exciting and vibrant market. The time is right to develop our Irish publishing programme, particularly in non-fiction and the best way to do this is to establish an editorial presence in Ireland," he said. "I couldn't be more delighted with the appointment of Eoin as publisher of this new venture."

Other publishers to have set up in Ireland in recent years include Penguin and Headline. Gail Rebuck, c.e.o. of Transworld's parent company the Random House Group, described the move as "another milestone" in its growth.

"Eoin has a fantastic reputation in the Irish market and I am delighted we have attracted him to this new role. Transworld Ireland is the latest example of how our new federal structure encourages each of our publishing companies to continue to innovate, develop and grow."

McHugh paid tribute to his colleagues at Easons but said the offer from Transworld had been "impossible to resist". "I am delighted to have been offered this position and look forward to working with former and future colleagues in seeking to make it a great success."
