Per Petterson wins €100,000 IMPAC

Norwegian author Per Petterson won the 12th International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for Out Stealing Horses (Harvill Secker), the only translated work on the shortlist this year.

The novel was one of 138 novels nominated by 169 library systems in 49 countries, and was chosen from a shortlist of eight, which also included Julian Barnes' Authur & George, Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men and Salman Rushdie's Shalimar the Clown.

"The IMPAC Dublin Literary Award is truly international as exemplified by the number of cities involved and the fact that the winning title and so many of the books nominated for the 2007 Award are works in translation from other languages," said Deirdre Ellis King, Dublin City Librarian. "Some 28 titles in fact were originally written in 16 languages other than English."

The award, which is a partnership between IMPAC and Dublin City Council, is the largest and most international prize of its kind, awarding €100,000 to the winner, €25,000 of which goes to the book's translator Anne Born this year.

Petterson has written five novels including To Siberia and In the Wake, and Out Stealing Horses also won the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize in 2006.

The winner was announced at Dublin's City Hall today (14th June).
