Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has won this year's Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction for her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun (Fourth Estate).
Adichie was the bookies' favourite to win the £30,000 prize—now in its 12th year—and the limited edition bronze "Bessie" trophy. Ladbrokes declared her odds even on Tuesday, a day before the awards ceremony. She beat fellow shortlisted authors Anne Tyler, Man Booker winner Kiran Desai, Rachel Cusk, Jane Harris and Xiaolu Guo.
Muriel Gray, chair of the judges, said: "The judges and I were hugely impressed by the power, ambition and skill of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel. It's astonishing, not just in the skilful subject matter, but in the brilliance of its accessibility. This is a moving and important book by an incredibly exciting author."
Karen Connelly won the Orange Broadband Award for New Writers, worth £10,000, for her novel The Lizard Cage (Harvill Secker).
