Dangerous brothers take Nibbies crown

Fraternal writing duo Conn and Hal Iggulden pipped Bolton comic Peter Kay to the post at this year's Galaxy British Book Awards, with The Dangerous Book for Boys securing the Book of the Year title.

The runaway hit, which has sold more than 550,000 copies to date through Nielsen BookScan, beat Kay's The Sound of Laughter, Sarah Waters' The Night Watch and Richard Dawkin's The God Delusion to take home the award, although Kay did win Biography of the Year and Dawkins snapped up Author of the Year.

Winners were crowned at a star-studded ceremony on Wednesday, with appearances from Cherie Blair, Sir Bobby Charlton and Sophie Dahl. Other awards went to Ian Rankin, who won Crime Thriller of the Year for The Naming of the Dead, and Steven Gerrard, whose autobiography won Best Sports Book, boosted by more than 4,000 votes from his supporters through Liverpool FC's website. The organisers said almost 200,000 public votes were cast overall, up by 50,000 from last year.

It came as no surprise that The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld won the Richard & Judy Best Read public vote, as it emerged as the bestselling title from this year's "Richard & Judy" Book Club selection. Runner-up was A M Homes' This Book Will Save Your Life, with Lori Lansen's The Girls in third place. Victoria Hislop was named newcomer of the year for The Island.

The Random House Group boasted four winners, while the Hachette group publishes three, and two were crowned from HarperCollins. The event will be shown in an hour-long 8 p.m. broadcast on the 30th March on Channel 4.
