23.03.07 Tom Tivnan
Bargain book chain The Works has reported sales topping £96 million for the year to end-April 2006 as it aims to continue expanding and building brand awareness. Revenue for the period jumped 4.2% to £96.3m from £92.3m. But costs also rose, and operating profit declined by 34% to £3.2m from £4.3m, while profit after tax fell to £2.1m from £3m.
In a statement the company said: "There are significant brand opportunities within the business for greater brand awareness, new stores, new product innovation, improvement in the supply chain and increasing margins."
The Works is the largest bargain book chain in the UK. It is the preferred bidder for the David Flatman chain, a deal expected to conclude by the end of March that will bring its total number of stores in the UK to more than 300.
