McGrath joins Quercus from Walker
15.03.07 Katherine Rushton
Quercus Publishing has recruited Mike McGrath as its chief operating officer, after 17 years with the Walker Books. McGrath joins the company from Walker's US subsidiary Candlewick Press--the largest independent children's publisher in America--where he was made c.o.o. in 2002. He joined Walker in 1990 and was appointed to the board of the Walker Books in 1998.
Quercus c.e.o. Mark Smith said: "I am delighted that Quercus has been able to attract someone of Mike's calibre and I look forward to working closely with Mike to manage the next stage of Quercus' development".
The 2005 startup, led by Orion and Century founder Anthony Cheetham, has had a stellar launch period, winning the 2007 Costa with Stef Penney's The Tenderness of Wolves, and turning a £200,000 profit on £1.6m revenue in the quarter to the end of December. It is also one of three finalists in the running for the PLUS New Company of the Year Awards.
