Romantic Novel shortlist for Valentine's
14.02.07 Anna Richardson
The shortlist for this year's Romantic Novel of the Year Award features one male contender on an all-British shortlist. The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook by Matt Dunn (Simon & Schuster) joins Welcome to the Real World by Carole Matthews (Headline Review), Learning by Heart by Elizabeth McGregor (Bantam), Iris & Ruby by Rosie Thomas (HarperCollins), Beyond the Blue Hills by Katie Flynn (Heinemann) and A Step in the Dark by Judith Lennox (Headline Review).
Jenny Haddon, chairman of the RNA, said: "Every love affair is unique, and the 2007 shortlist is bursting with unique characters, drama, wit and passion. Attraction, rejection and their consequences challenge both sexes and every generation, which is why I am so pleased that more than a quarter of this year's RNA reading panel was under 30."
The shortlist was announced at a pre-Valentine's champagne breakfast on 13th February, and the £5,000 prize will be awarded on 27th April at the Savoy Hotel. Last year's winner was Erica James for Gardens of Delight.
