Our client, a STM Publisher based in Cambridge is looking to appoint a Head of Production Operations for Maternity cover lasting 12 months. 

Role Synopsis: 

Implement the production strategy and systems, including staff, vendor and systems selection. Thereafter drive change and continual improvement to production processes - managing the content from acceptance to publication online. Utilise new media and advancing technologies to improve the product and pre-publication workflow; working closely with the Managing Editor and Head of Technology to implement streamlined and end-to-end solutions.

Key Tasks:

• Manage the production aspects of the publishing assistants’ roles and co-ordinate tasks with the Managing Editor; potentially employ and manage further publishing staff
• Manage the production vendor(s) and associated contracts/relationships (such as freelance copy editors; production tracking vendor; Production portion of the Online Host contract; CrossRef, PubMed Central, A&I services, etc)
• Manage the relationship and flow of content/data between editorial systems/processes and production vendor/processes to ensure as efficient, error free, and as automated as possible
• Manage the production budget line
• Ensure turnaround times are adhered to, maintained and improved
• Manage the flow of content, in xml format, ensuring as few conversions as possible
• Produce relevant operational statistics/KPIs to monitor efficiency of production processes
• Explore potential new developments in publication and implement any new requirements, ensuring the right content delivery and processing strategy is developed and implemented
• Manage the choice and implementation of a tracking system

Skills & Experience:

• Substantial relevant experience within production aspects of STM journals publishing
• People management
• Excellent communication skills
• Management of offshore vendors
• Attention to detail
• Project management 
• Workflow evaluation and management
• Understanding and knowledge of xml and associated workflows
• Enthusiasm to learn and expand technical knowledge
