Morgan Healey are retained consultants for this search. 

Our client a leading, a world leading scholarly publisher of journals and books are looking to appoint a Head of business development. Primarily responsible for identifying and proposing new, high impact, strategic business opportunities, with a view to supporting the company’s growth in the medium to long term.

 

This will be achieved through:
• Formulation and development of a Business Development strategy with
• established process and framework
• Creation of Business Cases to gain Board approval for Business Development opportunities
• Handover of approved opportunities for implementation by the business as a whole

The scope of the role is:
• Medium to long term prospects with medium to high impact
• Opportunities outside of core business, including mergers, acquisition, joint venture, collaborations or strategic alliance

The role will be measured on:
• Strategy development and implementation
• Appropriate identification of strategic growth opportunities
• The pipeline of opportunities created and developed
• Achievement of targets, as agreed 
• Contribution to out-performance of CAGR – exact targets to be agreed
• Successful implementation of new initiatives into the core business processes

Key Responsibilities:
• Formulation of strategy, including preparation, maintenance and implementation of a Business Development Plan
• Identification and development of a pipeline of key strategic commercial opportunities, including partnerships and new business ventures
• Management and integration of business / portfolio acquisitions
• Scenario planning and business cases to support individual initiatives
• Longer-term revenue generation and financial return, including appropriate cost management
• Reports on market intelligence and activity to stimulate challenge on company growth and direction
• Ensuring the sustained performance and motivation of the team

Role Specific Competencies:

Skills:
• Well-developed communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence cross-functionally at all levels
• Ability to translate complex concepts into clear written and verbal communications
• Lateral and conceptual thinker with proven analytical and problem solving capability

Knowledge:
• Graduate caliber and/or MBA
• 3 year plus in senior commercial or publishing role
• Established knowledge and understanding of the academic publishing industry
• Experience of high level negotiations with external stakeholders
• Experience of delivering major strategic projects

• Ability to work effectively with people at all levels
• Ability to quickly establish credibility with external stakeholders and to influence senior figures
• Enthusiasm, determination and the ability to make quick decisions
