Waterstones divisional manager for the East region, Ian Matthews, has left with “immediate effect” after 16 years of employment at the company.
Matthews joined the chain retailer in 1996 as a senior bookseller in Basildon, then worked his way up to shop manager before becoming divisional manager by October 2010.

E-books, plus the consumer downturn, have taken a £50m bite out of the print book market over the first six months of 2012, according to Nielsen BookScan data.
