Lonely Planet founders Tony and Maureen Wheeler have ended their ties with Lonely Planet, the guidebook publisher they founded in 1973. BBC Worldwide acquired 75% of the publisher in 2007 for £89m, and has now paid a further £42m for the remaining shares.

The decline in worldwide travel book sales has had a "considerable impact" on Lonely Planet, its parent BBC Worldwide (BBCW) has reported. Response has travelled far and wide to the news that Penguin has signed an exclusive deal with W H Smith Travel to solely sell its foreign travel guides. Since we broke the story last Friday, national newspapers and blogs have adopted and adapted the story.

DK Eyewitness Travel has been voted the top guidebook series by Wanderlust magazine; DK last won the prize 10 years ago.
