Spending on books in the UK fell by more than £56m last year, Nielsen BookScan data has revealed. Sales during the 52 weeks to 25th December 2010 totalled £1.696bn, down 3.2% on 2009, with volume sales falling 4.3% to 225.5m. A sharp decline in sales of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga has led to turnover at Hachette's parent Lagardère Publishing to fall by 5% in the first nine months of 2010. Sales for the period were €1.61bn, down from €1.69bn in 2009. Lagardere said like for like sales fell 6.8% during the period.
