Former The Book Depository managing director Kieron Smith pictured is to launch an online global bookseller, Best Little Bookshop, this spring.

The number of independent bookshops in the UK has fallen below 1,000 for the first time since records began. According to the Booksellers Association’s annual membership figures, 67 indies closed in 2013 and 26 opened, leaving the overall number of indies on the high street at 987, down from 1,028 in February 2013.

We all know the many things Amazon can do that a bookshop can’t, but rather than bemoaning our fate as a quaint, increasingly rare hangover from a pre-digital age, I’d rather consider what a bricks-and-mortar shop has that poor old Amazon hasn’t. A great deal; not least beautiful physical space.
