I have been enjoying Sarah Maitland’s Book of Silence. Watch out for it in November from Granta. This wonderful book extols the pleasures, and so much more, that silence can bring to our lives.
The book left me to trying to justify why we play music in the shop. It is not just a philosophical question, but a serious financial one....

"The tills are alive with the sound of Christmas" was the opening song of my youngest son's school play this year, and at the end of November I was doubtful that this would be true. The credit freeze and Northern Rock's collapse seemed to put the breaks on Santa's sleigh.
Thankfully, December has come good and the school play...
