“Crap” books undermine print, warns Florence

Hay Festival founder Peter Florence has warned that it is “almost impossible” to make a case for the retention of the printed book as an artifact while publishers continue to produce “crap books”. But insisted that it was “what’s in the book” that was important, not the format.

As Hay enters its final weekend, I caught up with festival director Peter Florence. He was remarkably relaxed, given the freakish weather that had besieged the start of the week – the local area had one sixth of its annual rainfall in just four days. Here are some of my notes from the interview:
