Mabrecon indie publishes own e-book

Bookseller Ron Johns, who runs publishing venture Mabrecon Books as well as owning shops in Falmouth, St Ives and Plymouth, has published his first e-book.

High Tide by Hugh Hastings (e-book £8, p/b £10.99) is a young adult spy thriller about a former MI5 agent forced to look after two children.

Malvern's Beacon Books to close

Malvern independent Beacon Books is to close in February 2012.

Owners Stuart and Anne-Marie Phillips-Broadhurst said they had decided to shut the 25-year-old bookshop after unsuccessful attempts to sell it as a going concern. The duo have run Beacon Books for the past 11 years and are now looking to retire.

I write from a small independent bookshop in the west of the country. We are in no way a remarkable shop, and we do not trade in a remarkable town. We are lucky not to have any immediate local competition as the nearest Waterstone's is five miles away and Amazon is therefore our main competitor.
