More than 236.9m books were purchased in 2008 at a total value of £1.773bn, down 0.4% and 1.6% respectively on 2007, according to the latest figures from Nielsen BookScan. At £7.49, average selling prices fell by eight pence (1.1%) year-on-year, representing the lowest figure since TCM records began in 2001.

Amazon.com has reported its “best ever” Christmas sales for the fourteenth year in a row – it said on its peak sales day of 15 December, 72.9 items were sold every second.

Despite a 21.7% rise in sales last week, the book market remained behind on last year.
