World Book Day - in pictures

Authors were out in force to celebrate World Book Day last Thursday. Events around the country ranged from a "Where's Wally" Day at Simply Books in Cheshire, to the launch of Quick Reads at 10 Downing Street.

Total sales of the £1 WBD titles were up hugely on last year, and the event—which included the choice of Boy A as the winner of the new 'Book to Talk About' competition—received blanket media coverage.

Borders’ Cheshire Oaks store hosted 120 children over the course of the day, all dressed as their favourite characters.

Author Nicole Dryburgh, who was left blind and wheelchair-bound after being diagnosed with a malignant tumour on her spine at the age of 11, celebrated publication of her first book on World Book Day with a signing at Waterstone’s in Canterbury. The Way I See It is published by Hodder. Dryburgh is pictured signing with her mother, Jackie.

More than 300 children joined a trail around Bramhall Village for Simply Books’ “Where’s Wally Day”. The store sold more than 100 Where’s Wally books on the day.

Author Chris d’Lacey spoke to children from the City of London School about his dragon books at an event organised by Tim Osborne of John Carpenter Bookshop.

Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen performed to children in both the eastern and western hemispheres at Meridian Primary School in Greenwich, where the Meridian Line runs through the school hall.
