The Random House Award for Outstanding Contribution to Bookselling

James Heneage

"For stamping his defiant mark on this challenging industry, and furthering the cause of professional bookselling, James Heneage, founder and former managing director of Ottakar's, swung the vote for this year's Random House Outstanding Contribution to Bookselling Award. It was the panel's unanimous view that Heneage had a significant and positive impact on the book trade since the launch of Ottakar's with Phillip Dunne in 1987."

"The panel concluded that under Heneage's stewardship in the past 19 years, Ottakar's became something remarkable a 141-store chain with smart branches, comprehensive ranges, great store events and knowledgeable staff, that while operating on a national scale, also succeeded in appealing at a local level. His achievement will leave an ideological and emotional imprint on this industry, concluded one judge. In July 2006, Ottakar's became part of the HMV Group, and at the time of writing, Heneage continues to be engaged in a consultancy role in the enlarged Waterstone's chain. Whatever his long-term plans, it is widely hoped he will continue to share his energy and enthusiasm for books, for the good of the industry"
